Dedication To Critical Thinking
by Saye Taryor

In your constant search for knowledge, many claims will cross your path.  Critical thinking involves how you decide which claims to be true, false, or if you should suspend judgment on the claim.  Critical thinkers understand the difference between facts and opinions and are more likely to focus on a specific issue, as a result, coming to a most reasonable conclusion based on all the available information.

Critical thinkers understand that biases usually control perception and judgment.  People overlook the negative actions of those they like and refuse to give the benefit of doubt to people they dislike.  If they want something to go well, they focus on its positives and if they want it to fail, they concentrate on its negatives.  CT’s understand this can lead to exaggerations and false characterizations of individuals.

Critical thinkers understand the difference between matters of pure opinion vs opinions that can be evaluated based on factual matters.  If a person thinks Jam taste better then Jelly, it’s a matter of pure opinion.  On the other hand, if a person thinks he can run faster then his friend, it’s an opinion that can be put to the test.  When someone disputes a claim by saying, “everyone is entitled to their own opinion”, CT’s know that sometimes opinions are formed through misinformation and untested fact of matters.  CT’s understand that some opinions lack more reasoning and intelligence then others.

Many people use “rhetoric”, or words and phrases, in a unique way to influences our beliefs and attitudes.  They do this without actually presenting why or how their claims are true.  Below is an example of rhetorical language.  Let’s say groups of people decide to hold a legal and peacefully demonstration, for something they feel passionate about.  In order to shed bad light on them someone may use the words, “radical trouble makers” instead of noting that the group peacefully demonstrated or just calling them demonstrators. Here’s another example.  A talk show host does a story called “Teenage drug use in America.”  What if the entire show is only based on the lives of young African Americans and the host ends the show stating that African Americans need to be self reliant and to focus on family?  Whether his statement is true or not, a viewer that is not a critical thinker will come away from the segment thinking that teenage drug use in America is mainly an African American issue, not understanding that all races are largely affected and that the presentation was bias or prejudicially presented.

Critical thinkers understand “innuendo” and how it allows people to insinuate something negative about something or someone without actually saying it.  They also recognize “loaded questions” that revolve around unwarranted or unjustifiable assumptions.  When the assumption is not true, the question is loaded.

Example: A young woman calls into a talk radio show to defend her position against death penalty and the host asks her how many abortions has she had. CT’s recognize how people sometimes use word like maybe, possibly and perhaps to water down their claims, just in case they are challenged.  Example: A reporter states that, “some may consider this to be a terrorist fist bump.”  The reporter is able to put the idea of a “terrorist fist bump” in the thoughts of his or her viewers without being held responsible for using an unnamed source for such a claim, especially when there has been no previous claim of such in the past.  CT’s recognize downplayers, horselaughs and hyperbole when they occur.

Downplayer example: News spreads that the Republican Party has raised more money during the previous quarter then any other party in the history of campaigning, and that they have tripled the amount that the democrats raised.  In response, a democrat tells the public that the democratic party has raised more money then the republican party for the last three years, and that the republican party was due, to finally make more money.

Horselaugh example: A female goes to her boss and tells him that she recognizes the fact that her male co-workers continue to make more then her despite the fact that she continues to bring in more revenue to the company then any of the other employees.  Her boss responds, “Ha, why do women always like to complain?”  “Weren’t you just in here yesterday complaining about the room temperature?”  The boss ignores the actual issue the woman has presented by laughing and using sarcasm of factual occurrences, to dismiss the valid claim presented.

Hyperbole example: Someone states, “George Bush was the most actively involved president during the civil rights movement.”  Most people would assume that George Bush was actively involved in some fashion based on the claim.  They would only question if he were the most active.  CT’s would go one step further to investigate if George Bush was actively involved at all, during the civil rights movement.  They understand that some questions can be based on entire falsehoods.

CT’s understand that people can be motivated to take positions on issues from language that plays on peoples pride, guilt, fear, loyalty and so on.  “Scare Tactics” and “Appeal to Anger and Indignation”.

Scare Tactic example: “I know you usually vote democrat but your nominee supports socialized medicine.  If you don’t vote republican, America will turn into a communist nation and we will lose all our freedoms.”  The objective of this statement is to convince the listener, by fear, that they will lose their freedom if they vote for the democratic candidate.  The speaker provides no facts to support such a claim.

Appeal to Anger and Indignation example: A man sits at his desk when a co-worker who wants his job enters his cubicle.  The co-worker says “Man, you work your butt off every day while your boss never is in the office.”  CT’s understand, just because the boss is not in the office does not mean he or she is not working.  The co-worker is only stirring up emotions without providing evidence for anyone to be upset.

Critical thinkers are able to distinguish the difference between claims about factual matters versus those that express moral values.  Words like right, wrong, ought and should are normally used to represent moral claims but can also be used for non-moral claims.  It is important to pay attention and recognize when individuals are not being consistent with their moral views.

Example: A man goes around telling everyone that it is “never” right to kill innocent people.  When asked if it was wrong for his countries army to have killed innocent people in a recent air strike against terrorist, he retracts and says, “In that case, it’s an exception.”

A second example of inconsistencies can be seen by the answers to the questions below.

Example: (John) Is the killing of innocent people “ever” ok?

(David) No

(John) Was Americas use the atomic bomb just, despite the fact that it resulted in the deaths of thousands of innocent people?

(David's response) Yes.

The Idea Of Examining Our Own Views

April 17, 2010
"The fool who knows his foolishness is wise at least so far. But a fool who thinks himself wise, he is called a fool indeed." I admit, there is much I do not know.  See, most individuals see the world in either Black or white. They rarely accept the fact that gray areas may exist, meaning that sometimes there is no clear-cut solution, or that both conflicting explanations may be true. The concept of accepting two realities, or multiple explanations that may sound conflictual in nature is never an option that exists for them.
Example:
A Mayor raises taxes 13% in his first month in office and cuts taxes 16% during the later part of that same year. The tax cuts and the tax hikes are considered to be the highest the city has ever seen. He runs for office during the next term and is debating against a local man who thinks he can do a better job. The opponent runs his campaign around the theme of lowering taxes. The opponent claims against the current Mayor is that the Mayor was responsible for the largest tax increase the city had ever seen during his first month in office. He does not mention the tax reduction of 16% during the later part of the year. Most of his followers are not aware of the fact that the mayor actually cut taxes at 16% during the end of that same year. They are however, very informed of the Mayors tax hikes in the first month which were historically high. The mayor on the other end explains that he is for lower taxes while his opponents laugh and call him a liar. He claims that he was responsible for the largest tax cuts in the city’s history. His supporters vouch for this sentiment and can support this claim as factual and accurate. However, many of them are not aware of the fact that he was responsible for the largest tax increase the city had ever seen in his first month in office.
The Mayors opponent then attacks the mayor and says that the only reason he reduced taxes was because the people did not like the initial tax hikes. The opponent also acknowledges that the city was not any better off then it was before. His supporters applaud. The mayor defends himself and says he did not like the initial tax hikes and that he would have preferred to cut taxes when he first took on the job. He then says that the taxes were necessary in order to save the city’s economy in the early part of the year. He smiles and then says, because of his actions, the city was able to receive the largest tax cuts in its history. His supporters stand up and applaud.
Here is the reality of the situation vs the perception of it. Both supporters are viewing the situation in their own perception or reality. Here is what’s actually taking place. The Mayor supporters are right when they say he delivered the highest tax cuts the city had ever seen, but his opponent’s supporters are also right when they say that the Mayor was behind the highest tax hike’s the city had ever seen. The problem is that both groups of supporters are ignorant to the all the facts that exist, so the entire picture is a cloudy one with no clear insight on the entire matter. They both feel that they have truth on their side and are morally right in fighting for their values. The mayors claims are true about him delivering the highest tax cuts in the history, in a literal sense, but if you examine the gray area, you can say that they mostly made up for the initial tax increase which were at 13%, and that he only improved taxes by 3% at the end of the year, which is a plus but not as large of a magnitude as the Mayor portrays it to be. On the other hand, his opponent claims that he is guilty of raising taxes at the highest it has ever been in the history of the city. Literally, this is a true statement. The problem is that he is not putting into considerations the Mayors tax cuts, which were at 16%, and literally, the highest the city had ever seen.
When the opponent says that the city is not better off (concerning taxes) then it was before, he is making a false statement, because literally, the city received a plus 3 in tax reduction. The claims of why the reduction took place are a matter they may never be resolved, so we just look at the facts that can be proven or examined.  So there you have it. Most situations have a lot of gray areas that are really never explored. Most people only accept views and ideas from the side in which support their perception of an issue. The idea of examining their own views and outlook is unthinkable to them. For some reason, it is much easier to attack the other side when you feel that you’re on the side of truth. For this simple reason, in order to be effective in this process, one must be willing to leave their emotions at the door and evaluate the foundation of their core beliefs and values.

7 Interesting Scriptures

(King James Version)

Jeremiah 10

1Hear ye the word which the LORD speaketh unto you, O house of Israel: 2Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. 3For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. 4They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. 5They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good. 6Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O LORD; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.  7Who would not fear thee, O King of nations? for to thee doth it appertain: forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee.  8But they are altogether brutish and foolish: the stock is a doctrine of vanities. 9Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men.

1 Corinthians 14

33For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints. 34Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law. 35And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church. 36What? came the word of God out from you? or came it unto you only? 37If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.  38But if any man be ignorant, let him be ignorant. 39Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. 40Let all things be done decently and in order.

1 Timothy 2

8I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting. 9In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;  10But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works. 11Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. 12But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. 13For Adam was first formed, then Eve.

Deuteronomy 14

2For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God, and the LORD hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth.  3Thou shalt not eat any abominable thing.  4These are the beasts which ye shall eat: the ox, the sheep, and the goat,  5The hart, and the roebuck, and the fallow deer, and the wild goat, and the pygarg, and the wild ox, and the chamois. 6And every beast that parteth the hoof, and cleaveth the cleft into two claws, and cheweth the cud among the beasts, that ye shall eat.  7Nevertheless these ye shall not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the cloven hoof; as the camel, and the hare, and the coney: for they chew the cud, but divide not the hoof; therefore they are unclean unto you.  8And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcase.  9These ye shall eat of all that are in the waters: all that have fins and scales shall ye eat: 10And whatsoever hath not fins and scales ye may not eat; it is unclean unto you. 11Of all clean birds ye shall eat. 12But these are they of which ye shall not eat: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the ospray,  13And the glede, and the kite, and the vulture after his kind,  14And every raven after his kind,  15And the owl, and the night hawk, and the cuckow, and the hawk after his kind, 16The little owl, and the great owl, and the swan, 17And the pelican, and the gier eagle, and the cormorant, 18And the stork, and the heron after her kind, and the lapwing, and the bat. 19And every creeping thing that flieth is unclean unto you: they shall not be eaten. 20But of all clean fowls ye may eat.

Luke 18

18And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? 19And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God. 20Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother. 21And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up.  22Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.  23And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich. 24And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!  25For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

Leviticus 19

28Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD. 29Do not prostitute thy daughter, to cause her to be a whore; lest the land fall to whoredom, and the land become full of wickedness. 30Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the LORD.

Leviticus 20

10
And the man that committeth adultery with another man's wife, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour's wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. 11And the man that lieth with his father's wife hath uncovered his father's nakedness: both of them shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. 12And if a man lie with his daughter in law, both of them shall surely be put to death: they have wrought confusion; their blood shall be upon them. 13If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. 14And if a man take a wife and her mother, it is wickedness: they shall be burnt with fire, both he and they; that there be no wickedness among you.

7 Facts Many Racist Don’t Comprehend

November 23, 2009

7 Facts Many Racist Don’t Comprehend

1)     Just because you attend church and believe in God does not mean you’re not a racist.

2)     Just because you cheer for players of other races whom may play for your favorite NBA, NFL, college sports, or fantasy football team, does not mean you are not a racist.

3)     Just because you don’t mind eating at the same table with someone of another ethnicity does not mean you are not a racist.

4)     Just because your favorite actor or television show host is someone of another ethnicity does not mean you are not a racist.

5)     Just because you like music performed by individuals from other ethnic groups does not mean you are not a racist.

6)     Just because you would have sexual relations with someone of another ethnicity does not mean you are not a racist.

7)     Just because you find yourself feeling sorry for “those people” and may have donated money or food, does not mean you are not a racist.

The slave master went to church and praised god.  Slave masters gambled each other while competing their slaves against one another.  They often cheered for their slaves to win the competition.  Every now and then the slave master would let his slave eat in the big house, and sometimes a slave was rewarded and allowed to eat at the table with the master.  The slave master often enjoyed the entertainment of his slaves through musical performance, dancing and humorous skits.  The slave master often had sex with the slave and sometimes would make sure that his slaves ate well and were clothed during the winter.

THE SLAVE MASTERS ALWAYS FELT SUPERIOR TO THE SLAVE NO MATTER HOW OFTEN THEY MAY HAVE BONDED (Peace, Love, Unity and Togetherness/ Stay 1up)

Five Important Questions No One Wants To Ask Or Answer

October 10, 2009

By Saye Menlekeh Taryor

1)
How Many of you lost chunks of money in your 401k in 2008, and how did this happen?  Did your employer allow plan administrators and other third-party service providers to charge excessive, hidden fees to your plan, breaching their fiduciary duty under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA)?  What role did the federal government play in investigating this issue?

       2)     How many of you have lost your job due to outsourcing (jobs taken overseas)?  Do you know which government officials (State or Federal) promote outsourcing of jobs, and which ones introduce and support legislation that give businesses incentives to keep jobs in the US, and introduce regulations on the outsourcing of jobs?

        3)     Have any of you noticed an increase in your healthcare plan over the last 10 years?   Can you list seven government officials (State or Federal) whom are on the record for introducing or supporting legislation’s that addresses the issue of healthcare quality and cost.  Have you ever read any of those bills to see how they have benefited you directly?  Can you list seven government officials in opposition (State or Federal) whom are on the record for introducing or supporting legislation’s that has resulted in the increase of the (cost of your current healthcare bill)?  Have you read any of the bills to see how you have been hurt directly?

      4)     Can you name three state and three federal bills that were passed over the last 20 years that has improved your life directly?  If so, do you know the individuals who were responsible for introducing these legislations, and the individuals who supported them?  Do you know the individuals who were in opposition to these legislations?

5) Without the establishment handpicking a short list of individuals for you to select as president in 2012, is there anyone (outside of Obama) who you would endorse to be the next president of the United States?  If so, what are the things they support in which you disagree with?  Are they aligned with anyone who is in opposition with your views concerning the issues in the first four questions above?  Reseach tool below

Fake Freedom Fighters

By Saye Taryor

Many supporters of the GOP, the Republican Party, Fox News, Glenn Beck, and other conservative radio personalities claim that their country is slowly being taken away from them by Obama’s administration and by socialist or even communist liberals in congress.  They have decided that they will not allow this to happen without taking a stand.  So now we have a conservative wing of Freedom fighters.  They are upset about the expansion of the government, (they are scared about losing their rights, as granted in the Constitution by their forefathers) they think they are being taxed too high………….Or they support the conservative principals of less taxes and open domestic markets with less regulation for big business.  Why, because they think the wealth will trickle down to the average citizen and create wealth and jobs for the nation.  They look at Ronald Reagan as blueprint for a presidency and embrace his politics.  They look at FDR and see the mistake that never should have taken place.  They see the Clintons and the Obama’s of the world as evil people with an evil agenda.  They see the Democratic congress as a bunch a crazy socialist loon’s.  Or just a bunch of stupid liberals being lead by a revolutionary communist with a hidden agenda.  They feel that spending and the national debt is getting out of control, government is too big and intrusive, and that there was a time when this country was once great and held the principals of their forefathers.  Since I like to keep it fair and balance (as Fox News would say) I will move on to show the hypocrisy in the new freedom fighting movement that has caught fire with the Republican Party.  I call it the “Fake Freedom Fighters Movement.”  If you’re one of the individuals who agrees with all or even some of the things I listed in the first paragraph, I am sure you would like for me to give an explanation as to why I feel this way.  We have a chaotic and foggy situation here, so let me bring a few facts to light.  The same people crying about the federal debt were not in the streets marching when Reagan and his administration took the Gross national debt from 32.6% to 53.1%.  These same freedom fighters praised him as their hero.  The same political party (GOP) they affiliate themselves with held the presidency during the highest increase of the national debt thus far.  (No freedom fighting protest under George Bush)  but let them tell it…it was Obama who is taking their country away from them.  Below are the top 3 presidents in increasing national debt as a percentage of GDP:

1. Ronald Reagan, Republican (Republican majority in Congress)

2. George H.W. Bush, Republican (Democratic majority in Congress)

3. George W. Bush, Republican (Republican majority in Congress)

4. Richard Nixon/Gerald Ford, Republican (Democratic majority in Congress)

http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/tables/09s0452.xls (supporting evidence from us census bureau)

I agree that the national debt is high and that there has to be some fiscal overlook, but to only attack the Obama administration and not be just as outraged at the GOP/ knowing what Reagan, Bush and Nixon/Ford did (by percentage in increase) during their administrations, is sort of a mixed signal here.  It’s hypocritical and some might say it is based off other hidden emotions or agenda.

My 2nd point is based off the claim that they are loosing their freedoms.  I want to run down a few things here that everyone reading this article should look into.  Rex 84 (1984), The USA Patriot ACT (2001), Verichip (2004), V-MADS or the Active Denial System (fully operated 2007) and then look the past history of Cointelpro.  If you are not familiar with these things, please look them up and see what is going on around you.  FOX News would have been outraged if any one of those things would have been introduced or presented during the Obama administration.  But you only heard about the Verichip on Fox and they did not question if the Bush administration could use such a device for taking freedoms away.  They presented it as a normal story, and you have never heard anything else about the verichip since.  But my God…….Obama is an evil socialist who will control your life with laws and suppress you with government and secret technology……ahh, do you know that each one of the things mentioned above came about during Republican leadership.  I am not saying that the Obama administration will be free of corruption and not use any of these things…I am however saying (if you are a real freedom fighter) you recognize danger and foolishness no matter which administration or political party is in office.  (Your in opposition to Universal healthcare)……But the Verichip is cool.  As if you didn’t loose more of your freedoms after the Patriot Act was passed by GW?  There have been people in America who have held fewer freedoms then others even after the constitution was written.  From the Jim Crow era through Cointelpro, true freedom fighters have stood up (and are still standing up to fight for freedom).  Freedom fighters fight to Obtain freedom from those who oppress.  These Conservative (fake freedom fighters) are talking about fighting to keep freedoms…..but they are siding with the people who have always been the Oppressor of Freedom in this country (the government).  They have been brain washed to think they are loosing power.  I agree one should fight for freedom but they are fighting with the people who stole their 401 K, and took their jobs overseas, and put them in the situation some of them are in now.  Now that is gangster….I screw you and then you fight on my behalf to keep money coming in my pocket…..WOW.  I say there is something else driving this movement of fake freedom fighters.  If they were true freedom fighters, they would have the GOP, the Democratic Party, the FBI, the CIA, the IRS, and all these organizations under a microscope…….they would not be at tea parties cheering with politicians and millionaire businessmen.  They would be skeptical of all politicians…People at these rallies experienced 8 years of GW………so how now can they still embrace Republican politics and forget how they lost their jobs and their 401K savings under conservative policies.  A freedom fighter is a fighter of morality and freedom for all….not a fighter for government and government principals of one specific party or some mega corporate firm.  They will tell you that Obama hangs with terrorist and evil pastor Wright.  But they will forget how Reagan’s administration pandered to terrorist and sold them weapons (Iran Contra Affair).…  They will not tell you how Reagan supported known terrorist like Sadaam H. and aided Iraq in the 1980’s (during the Iran-Iraq war) while he killed his own people with chemical gases.  So what if you were in the middle of a cold war.  You don’t sleep in the bed with evil and get them to do your dirty work, because it will come back to hunt you.  A true freedom fighter speaks out whenever an atrocity is being committed, no matter which political party is in office.  That’s is why I call this new conservative movement “Fake Freedom Fighters.”  They are not freedom fighters at all.

Finally, if you are against Universal healthcare because it is a socialist concept, then be consistent with such a stand. Patrician for no more public schools, Fight to do away with the public Library and the fire and police departments.  Those are also socialist concepts.  But if you are comfortable with those things then listen to the debate and honestly search for the pro’s and cons.  Go to different fact check websites and don’t let talk radio and cable news control how you feel on the issue.  If you still disagree then so be it.  For those of you who are honestly concerned, I can understand.  For all those fake freedom fighters…………..Just watch and read below and continue to allow FOX News, ABC News or any other media  to control how you think…..

We Need More Balance

Many would like for you to believe that there are no positives in socialism. Just like everything in life, there are both good and bad concepts in both ways of governing, and I would like to present a concept of the country I would like to live in. Since I live in a capitalist society, I would like to first off shake off the misconceptions about socialism. Many people tell you that we live in a Democracy and that socialism would take away our freedoms and our entrepreneurship spirit. We actually live in a republic based on the pure definition of Democracy and republic. They say the lazy people would live off the hard working people and that there would not be any economic growth due to lack of motivation and lack of competition. They may not realize that the local fire department, police department and public schools are operated by the state. The idea of the state running such enterprises is not perfect, but is no harm to the private sector. Let me rephrase that. The police department has shown harm to the private sector, but that form of inexcusable abuse takes place for due to other reason I will talk about in another blog . As for freedom in a capitalistic system, it is widely known that the US has had the highest imprisonment rate for over the last 25 years. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, a report released Feb. 28, 2008 indicates that in the United States, more than 1 in 100 adults are now confined in an American jail or prison.[ The United States currently has 5% of the world's population and 25% of the world's incarcerated population. One in every 31 American adults, that's 7.3 million Americans, is in prison, on parole or probation. Some have come to recognize that freedom is not a byproduct of capitalization, since many countries like South Africa, India, and so on are countries that have shown to have problems with freedom and liberty with its citizens.

I say the same can be said with the United States. Capitalism has nothing to do with freedom, since we all know that people of color were oppressed during America’s rise under capitalism. The mere fact that we conclude that socialism takes away freedoms and capitalism gains freedom is a false and misleading observation. Both systems have displayed cases of oppression and limitations of freedom. As for quality of services and products, the “World Health Organization” ranks the United States 72 in Health performance by country, and states that “access in America has deteriorated.” The United States is the only world power that does not currently have Universal healthcare for its citizens. Some socialist reforms may not blend well with our current form of system but some will. Many forms of socialism are flourishing around the Globe. Universal Healthcare is a prime example. The Republic of China is also flourishing economically. They are flourishing so well that the United States government is currently borrowing money from China and currently depends on China for economic stability. With all this being said, I still see a need for free enterprise and open markets. People should never be stopped from gaining capital. I also like the concept of a check and balance government so we should keep the same US based structure in place. House, congress and Senate seats should have limited terms and President and VP terms should stay the same. For those who believe this would never work, let me show you.

Let’s take a look at the changes that would be made to our current capitalistic society to blend in socialist improvements. Schools would be free or affordable to low-income individuals. We would eliminate all affirmative action programs. Universal Healthcare would become mandatory. Free housing consisting of single bedrooms for individuals and multiple bedrooms for entire families would be available for those in need. These homes consist of apartment and town-homes throughout districts with public transportations and business and educational resources. The homes would all have 1 full bath, kitchen with fridge, and a washer and dryer connection. Individuals living within these homes would be responsible for their own utilities, food, cable and satellite and other maintenance housekeeping expenses. Free enterprise in housing would still exist and individuals who could afford to live in luxury homes and plush apartments would still be able to do so. Those who wanted to build and sell condos and homes would still be free to do so if they could afford the cost.

There would of course be regulations to stop monopolies and exploitation of workers with low wages, to gain more capital, would be eliminated. All workers would get the same pay based on their occupation and the entrepreneur homebuilders would have to pay state wages. They could pay more to gain top workers but never less to gain more capital. Now you still have families motivated to live in better homes and people motivated to build new homes for capital gain. You now decrease the homeless rate and you motivate people to want to live in better conditions by not covering the entire house keeping cost and the utilities. You also charge low wage earners who want the government to handle home maintenance and housekeeping. In the main time, you allow them a choice to hire someone from the open market who may charge less or even more. Now free enterprise still exists and people could take advantage of this situation for capital gain. Low-income workers, or individuals who have no jobs will be motivated to work, to pay for the bills and the maintenance that would come with living in these homes. The limited space in these homes would motivate individuals to educate them-selves to gain better jobs to earn more income. The more individuals earn, they would now have the option of living in bigger homes and driving luxury vehicles. All of these things would still be open in the free market for purchase and sells.

The concept of a better living through work, production and regulations would go as followed. Low-income earnings would be based on specific jobs and their importance to the society by a vote of the people and elected government officials, the same as middle class and high-income earners. Low-income earners would make enough to cover living expenses. A single individual living in a one bedroom town home would make enough to cover moderate monthly utilities, food expenses (based on a budgeted system), public transportation fees and just enough for minimal housekeeping cost and educational fees for books and supplies. With education being free or low in cost, individuals would be able to schedule their courses around their workday and not be stressed out about paying monthly rent on such low incomes. They would have to sacrifice such luxuries as cable television expensive garments and entertainment fees if they were to climb out of poverty into the middle class. Free housing would not get them out of poverty, but it would provide them housing to live in and create an opportunity for them to improve their situation. Their hard work and desire would still determine their future. It would not just be a free handout.

The cost of education and Healthcare would be dramatically lowered, so they would now have no excuse and such so called divisive laws like affirmative action would no longer be an issue in this society. The middle class would consist of politicians, lawyers and entertainers. Taxation of their salaries would place them in the middle class bracket. They would have all the opportunities that we currently have in America but they would not be able to gain more than their state salaries from abusing the positions of power. Construction workers and many forms of labor would also be in the middle class. The middle class range of earning would be the same, as it currently exists, continuing as a wide range. Those motivated to be in politics would not be driven by money and power because the money would only be middle class and the power would be transparent and dictated by the people. The house, congress and senate seats would have limited terms and capitalist entrepreneurship would be regulated. Middle class earners who decide to live in free housing will have to pay mandatory housekeeping fees so that they do not take advantage of the system more than they already would be. Entrepreneurs wanting to outsource jobs for more capital would be banned if they intend to exploit workers by paying them less than the minimal salaries that are already in demand. No exploitation of workers by paying below standard wages based on an individual’s job description will be allowed no matter where jobs are outsourced. Those caught violating the law would be punished harshly.

High wage jobs would have all the perks that entertainers and politicians currently have in America. Veteran teachers and educational administrators, doctor’s scientist, and successful entrepreneurs creating jobs for the masses would be among these individuals. Students living in free state homes would be motivated to be educators scientist and productive citizens because they would know that they could earn a lot of money in these line of jobs. Only the best individuals would be hired to perform these jobs for the stage. Individuals would be allowed to create their own practices outside of the state but they would have to meet all requirements of the state and be licensed. The free market would still exist but the state would reward only the best and negotiate with those in the free market so that they may join the state in the effort to improve the country. Billion dollar entities like the NBA and the NFL would be taxed heavily and the tax dollars would go directly in to rebuilding the communities and creating jobs in the communities, which they represent. If an owner would go bankrupt, then the state, being the people would own the team (like they currently do in Green Bay for the Packers). Spending for such ideas would come from useless military spending, the money spent on welfare reform would be redirected towards the housing project and the creation of building these new hopes would be open to the free market to help stimulate the economy. The people that would take a direct hit from such a radical change would be politicians, entertainers, and Big businesses that earn most of their income from slave wage outsourcing. Money wasted on public education programs, that have not worked, would be redirected into weeding out bad teachers and paying good ones higher salaries. Along with higher taxation of companies that produce and sell tobacco, alcohol and adult entertainment, marijuana would be legal and taxed heavily and fortune 500 companies not creating jobs would be taxed heavily. Money would be taken from wasteful military spending and would be diverted to beef up homeland security and to regulate companies that hurt the economy because of bad practices. This is not a perfect world but I would prefer to live in this one then the current capitalist system we currently live in.

Social Entrepreneurs

Individuals who engage in social enterprise and draw upon the best thinking in both the business and nonprofit worlds in order to advance their social agenda.  "Social entrepreneurs identify resources where people only see problems. They view the villagers as the solution, not the passive beneficiary. They begin with the assumption of competence and unleash resources in the communities they're serving."
